November 7, 2019, 8:31:48 am - Doran Bridge, San Mateo, California

I've always wanted to photograph the Doran Bridge on a fogging morning. It reminds me of the great European Cathedrals. It spans San Mateo Creek at a height of 250 feet and holds eight lanes of I-280. I like the way the repeating forms nearly vanish in the background and the spiritual nature of the place. When crossing the bridge no one is able to see the structure below. However, one is treated to a view of what has become a world attraction - the Flintstone House.

October 8, 2019, 11:05:44 am - Yosemite Valley

Too much time has passed during postings. Little to no excuse. Posting is a discipline like diet and exercise. I recently went to Yosemite which was to be a four day/three night photo trip which turned into a one and a half-day/one night near failure. We stayed in tent cabins, without heat and nearly froze. We all agreed to cut the trip short and left that afternoon. Another part of the decision to leave early was the hordes of people who made it nearly impossible to visit some of our favorite sites. All of this resulted in a mere two hours of shooting. This is one of only a few photos taken. Oh yes, I also had a cold. I come to believe the only time to visit Yosemite is in late fall and winter.

I love the digital / internet era. The world wide web offers countless copyright-free images.  One great source is the Library of Congress where I found the photo of the hanger. There are numerous sources for background textures. Sometime in the near future, I would like to do a body of work that fuses works from the LofC with textures. This image is graphic and organic at the same time and has a feeling of power.

I like the feeling of movement in this image and the partial lack of scale. Some major force shaped this land making it a visual spectacle. I also like how the image takes your eye on a journey from the lower-left corner, sweeping around to the top of the foreground rock formation, and onto the repeating shape in the top left background.

This is not a composite but simply a straight-on shot of graffiti. I like the sense of depth and the feeling of movement and confusion. It also works in color but the black and white offers more mystery. Though this image has some order, it is still an abstract allowing each viewer their own interpretation.

March 15, 2018, 5:21:55 pm - San Miguel de Allende

We've seen a lot of these type of shots before. Like many, I'm a sucker for windows, doors, and walls especially if colorful, like this one, or lends itself to a strong black and white image. I appreciate the serendipitous aspect of the subject, where neighbors choose different colors to delineate their respected adjoining homes resulting in a cheerful happy place, much like San Miguel itself.

March 23, 2009, 6:26:59 pm - Near Salton Sea, California

I was drawn to the way the hill had been carved out over the years by those who see greater value in the destruction of nature than nature itself. The tracks in the foreground leading off to the right suggest the destruction is far more extensive than what you see in the image.

November 23, 2013, 8:33:47 pm - San Francisco, California

Chinatown, at night, is a fascinating place with its dark alleys and lack of the normal chaos that consumes the streets during the day. I lean toward busy subjects, always wanting a visual ride through an image with several stops. One could argue the man is the subject. However, I feel there are three equal subjects; the man entering the building, the stairway, and the dark entrance to what looks like a restaurant, each providing a sense of intrigue not knowing what lies beyond.

December 11, 2016, 4:32:45 - Las Vegas, Nevada

My favorite part of LV is in and around downtown where it transitions from the cheap, glitzy casinos of yesteryears to the slowly vanishing urban decay. I like the geometric nature of the image and the confusion of the ice sign above the backdown of whatever. There is also a sense of shadows.

October 26, 2008, 12:01:02 pm - Near Byron, California

One of the last remaining ruins in the San Francisco Bay Area is the Byron Hot Springs Hotel. I like the duality of the image, almost a diptych or mirror presentation with some variations in the two sides which can serve as a metaphor for choices, paths, directions, etc. I have photographed the hotel several times and enjoy the isolation and quietness of the place allowing me to visually and spiritually connect to this once awesome place with its unique past.

January 56, 2016, 11:25:22 am - Purisima Creek, San Mateo County, Ca

One of my favorite places to run is Purisima Creek west of Skyline Drive. It's a magical place which on occasions I try to capture its wonders. It mostly consists of redwood trees and is not far from the Pacific Ocean. Summertime, it sees a lot of fog and very few people.  I believe this image captures the tranquilness of this wonderful landscape.

March 21, 2011 - Death Valley

It should be obvious that this image is made up of multiple images. I always admired those who do thought-provoking composites such as Maggie Taylor, Dominic Rouse, and my friend Tony Williams. I admire the forethought and synergy of such work, oftentimes taking us to surrealistic places. This image is a crude and straightforward attempt to show dominance over Native Americans. However, the strange element here is the guy on the horse looks a lot like Emiliano Zapata. Someday, I hope to find the patience to create composites.

May 17, 2008, 7:19:18 am - Nevada

I believe this was taken somewhere in or near Virginia City. There is stark and lonely quality to the images, a time lost and forgotten, a sense of sadness like most abandoned places. Even the outside is void of life.

March 18, 2018, 7:18:32 pm - San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

San Miguel is a very festive town with processions and street activities mostly starting at dusk making it an ideal time to photograph. Allowing the longer exposure, the image transforms into a painting with colors blending together. Given the time of day, a sense of mystery is perceived.

April 18, 2019, 8:12:19 am - South of Carmel, California

I never get tired of visiting the coast. California has 840 miles of coastline with each mile different for the next. Carmel to Big Sur offers some of the more dramatic scenery. I darken the images to provide a stronger mood and soften the water to create a more ethereal look to the subject.
